''Thanks to ActionPlanner, we are more transparent and open. I can keep the board of directors informed if there are challenges in our processes and there are no hidden agendas or surprises, which is why we have also received a very good evaluation in employee satisfaction surveys.''
Challenge
Despite having a well-defined structure for strategy implementation, companies often struggle with the actual execution of their goals.
Many keep their action plans in simple formats such as spreadsheets and presentation slides and experience issues with updating information and monitoring progress. The result is typically lack of transparency from strategy to daily execution, no alignment between overall goals and the actual work, wasted time in finding and sharing information, and little empowerment of employees.
Our client faced a similar challenge.
Solution
ActionPlanner was suggested as a solution and the decision was quickly made to go ahead with a trial including senior management and a number of super users, totalling 30 users.
Within three months, the tool had proved highly valuable in four particular business cases and they decided to roll out ActionPlanner to all 160 employees. Since introducing ActionPlanner, our client has made significant progress; drastically increased its employee satisfaction, become one of the great places to work and received third party praise for introducing a high degree of transparency.
Ambition
Our client’s ambition is to stay on top of technological opportunities and strive for excellence. To succeed in strategy implementation, they decided to digitalise the management follow-up process and make it more agile.
The most urgent requirement was transparency with automatic sharing of strategic goals and actions across all organisational levels. They also wanted the ability to communicate and cascade initiatives, monitor and add new goals, update statuses and get progress reports. And as a nice-to-have, a user-friendly interface that both managers and employees could use 24/7.
Results
1. Great visibility and no surprises
2. Accountable people driving execution
3. Fewer and better meetings

CLIENT: MT Højgaard
USE CASE: Portfolio Overview
INDUSTRY: Construction
TEAM SIZE: 20 users
LOCATION: Nordic region
“ActionPlanner has been an important part of planning 54 initiatives, creating overview and ensuring progress until successful completion.”
Where do I go to get an overview of 54 Initiatives?
Initially 20 overall strategic initiatives were defined in a development plan by the VDC management team in MT Højgaard. In order to make the plan operational, the 20 overall initiatives were broken down into 54 more operational and actionable initiatives. These were all put into ActionPlanner to create a portfolio overview.
Systematic follow-up became a part of the team DNA
The result was successful execution of 54 initiatives one year before scheduled deadline and below budget. On a regular basis, the initiatives were updated with traffic light reporting, comments and KPI’s. Through a systematic follow-up process, the 54 initiatives were driven home securely by having clear project descriptions and good coordination throughout the entire process.
Results
1. Completion before deadline and below budget
2. Systematic follow-up process
3. Consolidated overview

USE CASE: Driving cross-border teams
INDUSTRY: Financial sector
TEAM SIZE: 130 users
LOCATION: Nordics and Northern Ireland
''Because we have transparency in real-time of what the team is working on collectively and individually, we get the most out of our most important resource – time. We are able to create synergies in eliminating duplicate work and encouraging knowledge sharing.''
Challenge
Global organisations face a number of business challenges, especially when going through a large transformation agenda such as a centralising process.
They may have teams in multiple locations, of different cultures and with a number of work streams without much alignment, that need to be consolidated into one global team. Danske Bank Group Compliance faced similar circumstances with lack of overview, multiple ways of working and its conventional planning and reporting approach being inadequate for a dynamic business environment.
Solution
Six months into the on-boarding, ActionPlanner was becoming a natural part of the everyday way of working for many users.
The positive outcome of the implementation phase was measured against activity and comments as well as weekly updates. The new unified structure and transparency resulted in overall better planning and prioritisation, more reflection and also leadership attention when needed.
Ambition
On order to successfully tackle its transformation programme towards becoming one global team, Danske Bank had three specific requirements.
Firstly, the company wanted a unified system to work across its departments and teams. This shared tool should support a common method of working, facilitate real-time visibility into execution and progress, and enable staff to coach, challenge and assist each other to be more successful. Secondly, there was a desire to improve the execution management skills. By helping employees stay focused in a fast changing environment, they can better reflect on progress and prioritise actions. Finally, the company wanted to create meaning for its employees. By establishing a direct link between high level objectives and operational actions, they could see their contribution to the business.
Results
1. Structure and communication
2. Reverse milestone planning
3. Synergies and transparency

CLIENT: Bactoforce International A/S
USE CASE: Small Medium Enterprise
INDUSTRY: Food & beverages inspection services

“Implementation of strategic goals requires focus on communication and transparency. ActionPlanner can break down the complexity of a strategy to initiatives, milestones and actions. The tool provides an overview and aligns expectations and prioritisation of deliverables across management, middle management and employees.”
Challenge
Small and medium-sized enterprises are often busy with running the daily business and struggle to form an efficient structure and process for keeping track of their long-term strategies.
One reason is that their plans tend to be hosted in simple and inadequate spreadsheet tools. Lack of effective communication across borders is another leadership challenge for international companies. Bactoforce International A/S had similar concerns before learning about ActionPlanner.
Solution
Bactoforce was offered to try ActionPlanner through a leadership development programme for small and medium-sized enterprises. It was initially introduced as a 6-month trial at the headquarters in Silkeborg, Denmark.
The tool was successfully implemented and now provides one common place for strategic efforts, prioritisation and progress. The strategy and actions are included in ActionPlanner –visualising past, current and future workload in a shared digital follow-up tool that is accessible from anywhere.
Ambition
Bactoforce recognised a need for transparency and clear expectations between the central business development team and its sales managers and suppliers located abroad.
Aligning the company’s long-term goals with daily operations was proving to be a challenge and strategy execution was at risk of disappearing in the flurry of day-to-day activities. The CEO of Bactoforce acknowledged the negative consequences of using basic spreadsheets and was looking for an intuitive management application to help bring the business to the next level of professionalism and with the potential to expand as the company continued to grow.
Results
1. Break down complexity in strategy
2. Efficient cross-border communication
3. Real-time reporting and follow-up
